KIndex Scale

The KIndex rating is calculated by converting the total performance points accumulated during a match into a standardized score that reflects the player’s overall influence on the game. During a match, players accumulate points through the various actions defined in the KIndex metrics framework. These points represent the raw performance score, capturing contributions across defensive, possession, and offensive phases. Once all actions have been evaluated, the total points are transformed into the final KIndex rating using a calibrated scoring scale.
The scale converts raw match performance points into a rating that ranges approximately from 0 to 10, making player performance easier to interpret and compare.

Raw Performance Score

The raw score represents the sum of all positive and negative contributions recorded during a match. Examples of actions that influence the raw score include:
  • goals and assists
  • defensive actions such as tackles and interceptions
  • successful dribbles and passes
  • saves and goalkeeping interventions
  • disciplinary events such as cards or fouls
Each event contributes a predefined number of points to the player’s match total. The resulting value represents the player’s overall statistical contribution to the match.

Rating Conversion

While raw points provide a direct measure of match contributions, they do not always reflect the relative impact of exceptional performances. For this reason, the KIndex model converts the raw score using a non-linear rating scale. This transformation produces the final KIndex rating, which is designed to be:
  • easy to interpret
  • consistent across matches
  • representative of true performance impact

Progressive Rating Curve

The KIndex scale follows a progressively flattening curve. This means that:
  • early improvements in performance result in rapid rating increases
  • higher performance levels require greater contributions for smaller rating gains
This approach ensures that elite ratings are reserved for truly outstanding performances.
The progressive scaling prevents inflated ratings while maintaining clear differentiation between average, strong, and exceptional performances.

Why This Scale Matters

The rating scale is designed to maintain statistical balance and interpretability. Without a progressive scale, raw scoring models often produce ratings that cluster too closely together or inflate high-performance scores. The KIndex scale solves this by ensuring that:
  • moderate performances remain distinguishable
  • strong performances receive appropriate recognition
  • elite performances require exceptional match impact
This allows analysts, coaches, and scouts to identify players who genuinely influence the outcome of a match.

Performance Interpretation

The final KIndex rating can be interpreted using the following general performance bands.
Rating RangePerformance Level
0 – 3Low match impact
3 – 5Below-average performance
5 – 7Solid performance
7 – 9Strong match influence
9 – 10Exceptional performance
These bands provide a quick reference for evaluating a player’s contribution relative to the overall match context.

KIndex Chart Point to Rating Mapping

This chart shows how Total Performance Points are converted into the final KIndex Score. The curve increases quickly at lower point totals and gradually flattens as it approaches the maximum score of 10. This ensures that strong performances are clearly distinguished while reserving the highest ratings for truly exceptional matches.

Model Consistency

Because the scale is applied consistently across all matches, KIndex ratings can be used to:
  • compare performances within the same match
  • track player performance across a season
  • identify standout individual performances
  • analyze positional impact and tactical contributions
This consistency makes KIndex a reliable indicator of individual match influence within the broader KoraStats analytics framework.

Summary

The KIndex scale transforms raw match contributions into a structured performance rating that reflects the true influence of a player during a match. By combining a comprehensive event model with a calibrated scoring curve, the KIndex framework provides a clear, interpretable, and analytically robust measure of football performance.
